W.C. Treadway, Jr., passed away peacefully and went home to The Lord, on Saturday, July 15, 2017 in The Woodlands, Texas. He was born in Huntington, Texas on October 9, 1931 and is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jeanne (Ginger) Treadway. W.C.’s greatest love and what he considered his greatest accomplishment was his family. He is survived by his son Mark Treadway and wife Teri Treadway, his daughter Stephanie Brown and husband Ken Brown, his daughter Shelley Waters and husband Randy Waters, his daughter Dana Bruton and husband Jeff Bruton and his son Robert Treadway. W.C. is predeceased by his oldest son, Stephen Treadway. And predeceased by his sister, Lavinia Quirrenbach. PaPaw, as he was affectionately known, includes a legacy of 16 grandchildren: Bryan Treadway, Andrew Treadway, Eric Treadway, Weston Treadway, Samantha Treadway, Katie Fuller, Olivia Brown, Walker Brown, Randall Waters, Jr., Missy Waters, Julie Pelosi, Danielle Bruton, Casey Bruton, William Treadway, Matthew Treadway, and Jessica Cooper. He was also the proud great grandfather to 16 great grandchildren.
W.C. attended San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas and this is where he first met the love of his life, Ginger Dobbs Treadway. A Houston all-city high school football star and all-state tackle in the late forties, he played for San Jacinto in what was the first football game ever televised “live” in Houston. He then attended Rice University in Houston and graduated in the class of 1954. He played four years of football and earned 3 Varsity Letters with the Rice Owls, and was on the 1953 Southwest Conference co-championship team that won the Cotton Bowl game over Alabama. In 1981, W.C. was named a Distinguished “R” Man at Rice University and was very active in supporting his alma mater particularly the athletics program and the Rice Owl Club over his lifetime.
After his college football days, W.C. was a very successful Head Football Coach and teacher first at San Jacinto High School and then Jesse H. Jones High School in Houston. He was named Coach of the Year for the Houston area in 1962 and 1964. W.C. went on to work for American Amicable Life Insurance Company. Shortly thereafter, he became the owner of his own independent insurance agency, Treadway & Associates as well as being an Assistant Football Coach at Rice University. He was very active over his life in many community endeavors including American Cancer Crusade, the Red Shield Boys Club, Fun Football Inc, American Red Cross and several Methodist churches. He loved bowling, fishing, and hunting in Texas for decades and cherished the friends he made sharing the love of sports throughout his life.
W.C. was a remarkable hard working man and friend to many, a loving father and grandfather, and will be missed dearly by his family and friends. May He Rest in Peace. A memorial service and reception to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 2 p.m. at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Harvest Sanctuary in The Woodlands, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored for a memorial gift to be made to Rice University Athletics, The Rice Owl Club, MS-548, PO Box 1892, Houston TX 77251 in memory of W.C. Treadway, Jr.
