By: Samuel J Ealy Jun 19, 2017
Carl and I met at the absolute worst time in my professional life. I was re-assigned to work as a clerk assisting Carl with the thousands of Tax Shelter cases he was processing. I had just been demoted from Revenue Agent. I was an angry black man and felt victimized by the "system. That demotion was the most defining event in my professional career but meeting and working with Carl those next seven months and again five years later as members of the same work group which lasted until he retired proved to be a blessing from God because what I learned from him about handling adversity with the right attitude eventually lead to my re-appointment as an Agent who finish a career spanning 31 years and six month and included earning performance awards every year for 17 straight years and being awarded US Treasury's Department Gallatin Award. Carl not only assisted me in thriving in a hostile work environment, but he mentored me in excelling in Audit Techniques and Report Writing. We were born a generation apart by twenty years, a race apart, by white and black, he from Texan and I from Arkansas but we had so much in common; the love for our families, our country, having both served in the military, and both having been born and raised on a cotton farm, learning to drive the John Deere tractor before we were 10 years old and we both were done with farming. If we are to be judged not by what we own but by what we give away to others, then Carl, my brother and friend, you have entered into your great reward. I thanked you a hundred times before you retired and you just shrugged it off but Ill do it again, Thank you Mr. Nolte.
